Introduction by Dorothy Maskell MBE - President of Creekside WI

"Creekside Women's Institute was founded in 1967 based in the village of Wootton Bridge and is one of 38 WIs on the Isle of Wight. Many people travelling from the mainland will know Wootton as the docking point for the Wightlink car ferry so, in a way, we are the gateway to the Island.
Wootton Bridge
The village is on the North East coast of the Isle of Wight looking across the Solent towards Portsmouth, and is situated almost midway between the historical capital town of Newport and the Victorian gateway of Ryde. The village itself lies at the head of the tidal Wootton Creek and over the last 100 years has grown from a tiny hamlet of some 70 inhabitants to one of almost 4000 people.
In 1969 the village became world famous for a weekend when the first major Isle of Wight Pop Festival was held in the village. 150,000 people descended on a then small village (which was totally unprepared) to see and hear Bob Dylan.
Creekside Today
Creekside today is a thriving Institute with 70 members and dual members. We meet at the Methodist Church in Station Road, Wootton at 7.15pm on the second Wednesday of the month. We have an enthusiastic President and committees and are committed to making everyone welcome at meetings, activities and events.
At our meeting each month we have a short business meeting followed by tea/coffee and home made biscuits, with a chance to chat to other members. This is usually followed by a guest speaker and topics are very varied. Between meetings we have various activities which everyone is welcome to attend and throughout the year we hold several events and social gatherings, and arrange outings to places of interest. Every member receives a monthly newsletter detailing all the activities and events.
We take part in Federation and National competitions. In 2010 we won the competition for best programme on the Island and this was followed by achieving 3rd place (from several thousand entries) in the National competition. Our Press Correspondent, Margaret Paice won the County Press shield for best press correspondent. In July each year we are involved in Wootton village’s ‘Party in the Park’.
We welcome new members and are a very friendly and active Institute, and have great fun in what we do. If you would like to join us please Contact us here."
